Frequently Asked
Questions
Yes! All of our breads — and many of our pastries — are made with natural leaven (a sourdough starter, or fermented water and flour mix, instead of commercial yeast) and are fermented for at least 24 hours. This is true of every loaf we make, including our crusty loaves made with white and whole-wheat flour, our ancient-grain boules, our semolina Italian rolls, our rye bread, our milk-bread buns, and even our baguettes! And while each of our loaves has a distinct taste and consistency, they all have that slightly tangy flavor and chewy texture of good sourdough.
We use all organic flour, which we currently source from Community Food Works/Milestone Mill (Hudson Valley, NY), Wildhive Farm (Hudson Valley, NY), Milanaise (Quebec), and King Arthur Flour (Vermont). For other ingredients, we choose organic whenever possible. However, our products are not certified organic.
Bread, pastries, bagels, and some beverages can be pre-ordered from our Barbarossa location after 3:30 pm the day before you’d like to pick up - so you can order Friday afternoon for a Saturday pickup, e.g. We do not currently take pre-orders at our Broadway location. (For catering and large orders, please email us in advance!)
You can pre-order after 3:30 pm the day before you'd like to pick up — so you can order Tuesday night for a Wednesday pickup, or Friday afternoon for a Saturday pickup. You'll be able to order bread, select pastries, and some beverages for pre-order. We cannot currently take pre-orders for made-to-order sandwiches, and cannot take pre-orders for more than one day in advance. (For catering and large orders, please email us in advance!)
Our online ordering platform offers delivery via DoorDash and UberEats. If you are within their delivery radius, you can order anything we sell online and they'll dispatch a driver to your door!
We are unable to accept email orders at this time. But you are welcome to call during business hours, or to walk into the shop and place an order there. Bread and pastries are available immediately, and most sandwich orders take 15 minutes or less to complete. (While you wait, you're welcome to have a seat or enjoy a beverage on our outdoor patio!)
We sell several varieties of our naturally leavened sourdough bread. Descriptions for each of our signature items can be found on our About page.
We now sell our fresh-baked bagels every day, along with cream cheese, lox, and other goodies.
Yes, we sell our sourdough starter! (We ask for a day's notice to fill starter orders.) We also sell flour and other supplies for home bakers; you can find our current offerings in the Provisions section of our online store.
Sorry! If it says sold out or you don't see the type of bread you are looking for, it means we don't have it for sale online right now. However, we do reserve some bread and pastries for sale exclusively in the shop (and we may adjust quantities online throughout the day as more things come out of the oven), so you're always welcome to check there. We'll also be selling day-of exclusive pastries and loaves that aren't available for pre-order, so it's always worth checking what's in store — or on social media — the day of.
The best way to stay in-the-know about special sales and events is by following @kingstonbread on Instagram or subscribe to our newsletter to get an email every Friday about the special breads and pastries for sale that weekend, and for a reminder when preorders go live Friday afternoon. Email subscribers are also the first to learn about special holiday sales and other events.
While our bread is not gluten-free, we do serve kasha (aka buckwheat groats) and granola, both of which are gluten-free. However, if you are really craving gluten-free bread, we recommend checking out Meredith's Bakery out on Route 28, which makes a large selection of gluten-free items. Our sister shop, Rough Draft Bar & Books, is located right around the corner and sells Meredith's gluten-free scones.
We try to have at least a few vegan offerings on our menu at all times. Our bagels and all of our bread is vegan unless otherwise specified (like our Shokupan loaf and milk-bread buns, which include dairy). We also offer vegan sandwiches, and we try to have at least one vegan cream cheese in-house for Saturday morning bagels.
Yes! You may notice quantity limits for certain types of pastries sold online. If you'd like to order larger quantities of croissants, other pastries, or bread, please email us at least three days in advance so we can make sure to accommodate you. You can also email us if you're interested in opening a wholesale account, or check out our catering page for ideas about pastry, sandwich, and bagel platters.
Here is a list of places currently selling our bread and pastries for retail, or using them in their kitchen. Please let them know if you enjoy your purchases there!
